Overview

OpenValve is not a timer-based irrigation controller. It does not simply water at a fixed schedule. Instead, it measures the soil moisture and waters when the soil gets too dry.

OpenValve’s watering behaviour is mainly determined by two settings and two setup conditions:

  1. Opening Threshold: when watering starts
  2. Additional Time: how much longer watering continues after water reaches the sensor
  3. Sensor Placement: where and how OpenValve measures the soil moisture
  4. Soil Type: how the soil stores water and how water moves through it
