Water container

Start with a suitable container for water storage. The container does not necessarily need to have an outlet yet, because an outlet can be added with a tank fitting / bulkhead fitting.

When choosing or preparing the container, keep these points in mind:

  • The container should not let in too much light, because light encourages algae growth.
  • The container should have a lid or cover, but it should not be completely airtight. Air must still be able to enter the container while water flows out.
  • The container should be large enough for the area you want to irrigate.
  • The outlet should ideally not be placed directly at the very bottom of the container, but slightly above it. Dirt and sediment tend to accumulate at the bottom and should not be drawn into the irrigation system. Keeping the outlet slightly elevated also means that a small amount of water always remains in the container. This remaining water adds weight, which improves the stability of the container in windy conditions.
  • The container must be elevated to create water pressure, either by hanging the container or by providing a sufficiently stable construct underneath that supports the weight and keeps the container from falling even on windy days.
